Juniors Suffer First League Defeat   15/04/2015

Mervue Utd A 1-3 Corrib Rangers A (Premier Division)

Mervue Utd's Junior A team suffered their first defeat of the season in the league following a 3-1 loss to Corrib Rangers at Fahy's Field on Tuesday evening.

Former player Dave Goldbey scored early in each half (16 and 53 minutes) to hand the visitors a 2-0 lead as he finished from close range in the 16th and 53rd minutes.

Mervue sub Stephen Cunningham pulled it back to 2-1 in the 68th minute when he scrambled home from close range following a Alex Lee corner from the left.

Rangers then had Brian Connolly harshly sent off after two yellow cards for two tackles before Rangers scored one of the best goals seen at Fahy's Field this season.

Rangers passed the ball out of defence and out wide to winger Paul Smyth on the left wing as he raced forward before swinging in a smashing cross which Martin Connell finished brilliantly into the far corner past a helpless John Egan for 3-1.

With only two games now remaining the Premier Division league title has been surrender after four consecutive seasons at Fahy's Field, as seven drawn games has proved costly to this season's title ambitions, as league honours now rest between leaders Athenry and third placed Corrib Rangers who meet in the final game of the season next month.

Ger McGrath's side now must concentrate on Connacht Junior Cup glory as they host Iorrais Aontaithe, at Fahy's Field on Sunday week, 26th April.
