Connacht Cup Treble in Sligo
It was another fantastic week for Mervue Utd teams as all three Connacht Cup title’s played for in Sligo last weekend were captured by the club’s U-12, U-14 and U-16 teams.
The U-12 A team kicked things off as they defeated city rivals, Salthill Devon, 2-0 in the opening Cup final on Saturday. Goals in either half from Dawit Dems and captain Kyle Fitzgerald secured the provincial title for Wesley Fitzgerald and Alan Conboy’s squad.
The U-14 A team made it a club double on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Mayo side, Kiltimagh/Knock Utd 2-1 in a very entertaining game. Keith O’Connor fired them in front to led 1-0 at half time and captain Mark O’Halloran doubled that lead after the break but Kiltimagh/Knock converted a late penalty to reduce it back to the minimum for a nervous finish.
The treble was completed on Sunday afternoon as the U-16 team defeated neighbours, Renmore, 3-0 in their Connacht cup final. A goal from Tom Kidd had them in front at the break and second half strikes from Keane Griffin and Luke Smyth ensured a third provincial title of a very succesful weekend in Sligo for the club.
This is the second time the club has captured all three underage titles in three years having also completed the feat in Castlebar in 2017. It could also be four Connacht titles as the U-18 A team’s scheduled final due to be played last Sunday against Manulla was postponed and is to be re-fixed to a later date.
The club’s U-15 A team also claimed the Galway FA Premier Division title following a very entertaining 3-3 draw with Salthill Devon on Monday afternoon at Fahy’s Field. Only needing a point with two games remaining goals from Brooklyn Ogbemudia, Keane Griffin and Aleksji Dugic secured that point to claim the league title.
Well done to all four squads on a great achievement and big thanks to all our supporters of all our squads.
