Juniors Win in Bohermore   01/06/2018

GFA Premier Division

Galway Hibs 0-5 Mervue Utd

The Junior A team continued their winning form as they defeated Galway Hibs 5-0 in their penultimate Premier Division game in Bohermore on Thursday night.

Needing to win their last two league games to force a possible playoff with leaders, Athenry, they made no mistake in collecting all three points as an excellent first half performance saw them lead 3-0 at the break.

With the Connacht Junior Cup title safely secured last Sunday in Sligo, Gareth Gorman and Noel McDonnell’s side are now focusing on league matters and hoping to complete a league and cup double for the season.

Barry Moran fired them ahead after good work from Enda Curran set him up to beat Padraig Lally with an excellent finish from inside the box. Enda Curran then doubled the lead with cracking lobbed effort over Lally to make it 2-0 before the half hour mark.

Penalty hero from last Sunday’s shootout win in Sligo, Paul Healy, then added the third when he finished from close range following a corner into the box for a 3-0 interval lead.

Enda Curran doubled his tally for the evening with another cracking finish from outside the box as his well struck low effort into the corner beat Padraig Lally for 4-0 mid way through the second half. Sub Peter Walsh completed the scoring when broke away with two minutes remaining before slotting past the advancing Lally.

The win sees them draw level on points with Athenry and both teams have just one game remaining. Leaders Athenry host an already relegated St Bernards this evening (Friday), while the juniors have an away trip to Drom to face Salthill Devon on Sunday morning with kick-off at 11 am.

If both teams win their final league game then a play-off will be required to decide this season’s GFA Premier Division champions.

Mervue Utd: Peter Healy, Aaron Finnerty (C), Tommy Walsh, Paul Healy, Kevin Fitzpatrick; Jason Molloy (Tommy Molloy), Mark Griffin, Stephen Larkin (Ciaran Foley), Eoin Concannon (Emmett Shaw); Barry Moran (Peter Walsh), Enda Curran ( Mike Tierney)
