The club's Junior team advanced to the national open draw of the FAI Junior Cup after a 4-1 win over city rivals Salthill Devon in the fourth round at a wet Drom on Saturday night

Two goals from Simon Walsh, a penalty from Steve Cunningham and an own goal saw Ger McGrath's junior side safely through after a competitive affair in Drom under lights.

The home side started brightly and were shading the issue until Mervue put a flowing passing movement together down the left on 15 minutes to open the scoring. 

Tommy Walsh started the move at left back advancing down the wing before playing a pass into Barry Moran who moved the ball onto Shane Keogh and he fed the ball to the supporting Simon Walsh who fired the ball across the home keeper and into the far corner for 1-0.

That score should have been doubled shortly after that when Dara Ryan's initial shot was saved and Stephen Cunningham then struck the post from the rebound and Ryan headed the loose ball onto the crossbar as the visitors started to increase the pressure on the home goal.

The score was doubled before the break when Tommy Walsh floated a dangerous free-kick into the box on 35 minutes with a Salthill defender turning the ball into his own net to give the visitors a 2-0 interval lead.

That lead was increased to 3-0 three minutes after the break when another excellent passing move involving Dara Ryan, Stephen Cunningham and Barry Moran created another opportunity for Simon Walsh and he once again finished into the far corner for his second of the game.

The home side pulled a goal back from the penalty spot on 74 minutes when player/manager Breen Geraghty sent Peter Healy the wrong way to make it 3-1.

Stephen Cunningham earned himself a penalty in the final minute when he was taken down in the box after a ball from Alex Lee sent him through and he dusted himself down to convert the spot kick as Mervue ran out 4-1 winners in the end.
