U-12's Retain Duffy Cup in Westport   25/08/2014

The club's U12 squad retained the Duffy Cup in Westport on Saturday afternoon as they remained unbeaten throughout the annual tournament hosted by Westport Utd.

Eric Connolly and Owen Shaughnessy's squad won all four of their group games to advance to the quarter final stage were they defeated Mayo side Manulla FC 6-0 to reach the last four.

It took a penalty shootout win in the semi-final to get past Sligo Rovers in a very tight game as Mervue came from 2-0 down at the break to force a 2-2 draw with goals from Tom Kidd and Baba Adeeko forcing the shootout were they advanced to the final to face Derry City.

After a very entertaining game Mervue came from 2-1 down to run out 4-2 winners in the end and retain the Duffy Cup won last year by the club also. Goalscorers in the final were Aaron Neary, Baba Adeeko and Jesse Eboosle with two.

Mervue captain Calum Carroll was also named Player of the Tournament.

The U-12 B team also had a great tournament as they qualified from their group for the quarter final stage also were they narrowly lost out 3-2 to Sligo Rovers having led 2-0 in that game.

Well done to Eric Connolly and Owen Shaughnessy and their young squad on a great weekend.
