U14's Advance to SFAI Goodson Cup Final   12/04/2014

SFAI U14 Goodson Cup (Semi-Final)
Mervue Utd 3-1 North End Utd (Wexford)

Two goals from Aaron Connolly, one in either half, and a second half goal from Colin Kelly ensured Mervue Utd advanced to the SFAI U14 Goodson Cup national final after a 3-1 win over Wexford side North End Utd at Fahy's Field on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors created the first chance after just two minutes when winger Brandon Sinnott was played in but he mis-hit his effort in front of goals as Cian Mulryan gathered the ball. On seven minutes a strong run from Aaron Connolly set up Colin Kelly but he saw his well struck effort pushed away by North End keeper Rhys Doyle.

A minute later and Adam Kelleher did well on the right cutting inside and rounding a defender before shooting wide of Doyle's right hand post, while Cian Mulryan saved well at the other end as the game remained scoreless in the opening quarter.

The deadlock was broken on 17 minutes when Aaron Connolly pick up an Adam Kelleher ball and cut in past a North End defender and shooting accross Doyle into the far corner for 1-0.

The visitors almost drew level on 23 minutes when Liam Berry got through but he lifted his effort just over Cian Mulryan's crossbar as the homeside led through Connolly's strike at the break.

Two minutes after the restart Colin Kelly's effort just cleared the crossbar after good work on the right, while Adam Kelleher fired another effort just past the post after being set by Connolly.

Another Connolly effort was cleared off the line by North End defender Kallem Broaders on 51 minutes before the home side doubled their lead three minutes later.

Adam Kelleher released a ball over the top for Colin Kelly to run onto and the young striker showed real composure as he took his time to drag the ball back around the covering defender before slotting the ball into the bottom corner past Doyle.

The result was sealed five minutes from time as Aaron Connolly grabbed his second of the afternoon as he powerfully headed home Adam Kelleher's right wing cross for 3-0.

North End were denied by Cian Mulryan as he saved Leon Cullen's close range header from Kyle Kennedy's corner with a minute remaining.

They did pull a goal back in injury time as winger Brandon Sinnott fired a low effort past Muryan from 25 yards for 3-1.

Connolly should have completed his hat-trick with virtually the last kick of the game when he raced through on goals but his effort just cleared Doyle's crossbar.

Damien Brennan and Rynal Browne's side will now face a Dublin side, St Francis or Belvedere, who play in the other semi-final, in next month's decider in Dublin.
