Juniors Capture Connacht Junior Cup   28/05/2018

The club's Junior A team captured the Connacht Junior Cup for the seventh time after a very tense 7-6 penalty shootout win over Carbury FC in Sunday's final played at the Sligo Showgrounds.

An early Enda Curran header after just three minutes had given them a great start but Carbury levelled matters two minutes before the break as Mervue failed to clear a corner kick and Steve Feeney poked home to leave it 1-1 at the break.

Jason Molloy struck the crossbar in the second half, while Carbury also had a great chance but Aaron Murrin shot wide of Colm Power's post as the game went to extra time were no further goals were scored either to send the game to the dreaded penalty shootout.

Peter Healy had replaced Colm Power in goals in the last minute of extra time with the penalty shootout in mind and he prove to be Mervue's hero as he saved Carbury's seventh penalty after thirteen excellent penalties from both sides.

Mervue captain Aaron Finnerty was presented with the Connacht Junior Cup as the club claimed a seventh provincial title, as he repeated the feat of his father, Bryan, who captained the Mervue winning side back in 1991.
