U16's Come Up Just Short in SFAI Final   17/05/2017

U-16 SFAI Cup Final

There was to be no All Ireland title for Mervue Utd’s U-16 squad as they lost out 2-1 to Dublin club, St Kevin’s Boys, in a very keenly contested SFAI Cup final played at Jackson Park in Dublin last Saturday afternoon.

Despite finding themselves 2-0 down at half time Coley Kelly, Damien Brennan and Pa Connell’s team didn’t drop their heads and put in an excellent second half performance which just came up short in the end. Keelan Creaven almost reduced the deficit back to 2-1 five minutes after the break but his powerful header just cleared the crossbar. As they continued to dominate possession and put pressure on the St Kevin’s goal they eventually pulled a goal back as Mikey Devaney headed home a Colin Kelly corner kick at the near post. Despite continuing to pile on the pressure they just couldn’t find a way past a very well marshalled home defence as that equaliser never arrived.

The club and team would like to thank all those supporters who travelled in such big numbers to Dublin to support the team and gave them great encouragement particularly in the second half and also to team sponsor Ronan Rooney of Rooney Property Consultants.

Well done to our U16 squad and the great effort put it by everybody but just wasn't to be but they did the club and Galway proud on the day and with a bit of luck could of seen a different result. Well done to Coley, Damo, Pa and their squad. They have had a fabulous season so far winning the  Connacht Cup, Premier Division and SFAI Regional Cup and have a Premier Cup final to come tomorrow.

They take on Salthill Devon in that Premier Cup final at Eamonn Deacy Park with kick-off at 4 pm and will be hoping to round off an excellent season with a fourth cup of the season.
