Big Connacht Cup Weekend for Club Teams   28/04/2017

Mervue Utd News

A big weekend ahead for the club as three underage teams are in Connacht Cup final action as the U-12, U-14 and U-16 squads will all look to capture a treble of provincial titles in Castlebar on Saturday and Sunday.

The U-16 team are first in action on Saturday as they take on Sligo side, Strand Celtic, at Milebush with kick-off at 12 noon. Coley Kelly and Damien Brennan’s team will be hoping to retain the title for a second year in a row for the club. They warmed up for their provincial final appearance with two league wins over the last week.  They defeated neighbours, Renmore, 5-0 to move top of the Premier Division table last Thursday night as Colin Kelly scored twice along with goals from Aiden O'Halloran, Adam Farrell and Ethan Fiorentini. On Sunday afternoon they recorded another 5-0 win this time over Maree/Oranmore as Colin Kelly hit a hat-trick and a goal each from Mikey Devaney & Aiden O'Halloran secured the win. Best of luck to Coley Kelly and Damien Brennan's and their squad on Saturday.

The U-12 team will take on Mayo side, Manulla FC, in their provincial final on Sunday morning with kick-off at 12 noon at Milebush. They prepared for their final with two league wins also over the last week. Last Saturday they defeated league title rivals Maree/Oranmore 1-0 to move top of the table as Ethan McAuley scored a great header for what was the only goal of a very tight game. They followed that up with a 5-0 win over Corrib Celtic to move four points clear at the top of the table on Tuesday evening at Fahy’s Field. Eoin Griffin scored twice along with goals from James Lukua, Keith O'Connor and Josh Nyland to secure another important win. Best of luck to Gary O'Connor and Brian Laffey's young side on Sunday.

The U-14 team will face Athlone side, St Francis, in their provincial final on Sunday afternoon with kick-off at Milebush at 2.30 pm. They also warmed up with a comfortable league win as they recorded their twelfth league win from twelve games with a 6-0 win away to Knocknacarra on Tuesday night. A hat-trick from Ben Lalor, two goals from Sam O'Neill and a goal from Ben Stanik secured the win.

All support would be appreciated by the club for all three squads in Castlebar over the weekend.
